During
a lot of years of industrialisation, lots of different plastics have
been thrown into the oceans from a lot of different spots all over the world (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian...). No one
ever cared about it until the 20 years old Boyan
Slat realised:"Three
years ago i realised what two whole centuries of industrialisation have
left us with".
He's
the person who started the project "The
ocean cleanup". This
company is still in progress. It is divided into three parts:
1.-
CROWDFUNDING: With
the support of over 38.000 founders from 160 different countries, in 100 days
over 2 million US dollars have been raised!
2.-
RESEARCH: Between
November 2013 and July 2015 "The Ocean Cleanup" made 6 expeditions to the North Atlantic to measure the the density of plastic which was circulating in that ocean.
3.-
TESTING:
In 2015, a series of scale model tests of "The Ocean Cleanup"’s system
were performed. Testing at a reduced scale allows you to try out lots of things a lot of times at a low cost. The main goal of the campaign was to discover the physical forces which were going to act over the cleanup barriers when exposed
to waves and currents. Results help to improve the design,
ensuring it will resist and be operable in storm conditions.
Their
next step will be to deploy the pilot.
I
think that Boyan Slat is one of those people who the world needs.
He's a really intelligent person who just doesn't say words, he just
lets actions speak for him. I think that
Boyan is a real hero and deserves to be admired.
No
one ever would've discovered such an amazing solution and if someone
did, he'd never be able to do it like Boyan.
